Should We Let Go of Perceptions? Let Go of What We Think Is the Ultimate Truth?
Apr 07, 2025
In a previous article, I said that it’s not important to keep spiritual teachings in your mind and that we should let go of them to see what’s in front of us.
A viewer reached out with a really good question about what I said. He asked if we should also let go of seeing or feeling perceptions. In addition to that, he also asked if we should let go of what we think the ultimate truth is. Here’s my answer.
Should we let go of perception?
It sounds like a simple question, but if we really start thinking about it, we could probably write hundreds of books on it.
What is perception in the first place?
If you dig into Buddhism or Advaita Vedanta philosophy, you’ll find very elaborate answers. They’ll explain what perception is, what it consists of, how it’s structured, why it is the way it is, and so on. You could learn Sanskrit, study everything about it, but in the end, you wouldn’t be any wiser. It’s like if you ask me what a banana tastes like. I could tell you everything about where it comes from, how it looks, the nutrients of the banana, and so on, but you still wouldn’t know how it tastes.
The thing is, any answer you come up with regarding what a perception is, is included in your perception.
Instead of knowing or understanding what a perception is, you just come up with more perception. In the end, we’ll have to come to the conclusion that we really don’t know what perception is in the first place. If I don’t even know what perception is, how much less do I know how to let go of it.
When we stay in this not-knowing mind, the question of what perception is and how to let go of it is no longer a problem. When it’s cold, you put on a jacket. When it’s hot, you turn on the AC. Look at what’s in front of you. Then, everything becomes the way. There is no need to hold on to any perception, or to push it away.
If you attach to a certain perception or idea, as I mentioned in my previous video, you will not see what’s in front of you, and you will make it into a problem. When it’s cold, you’ll keep thinking about it—if it’s good or bad, if it’s a problem or not, if you should let go of it or not, if it’s spiritual or not spiritual, and so on.
You’ll make everything into a problem and keep thinking about it, completely forgetting what’s in front of you right now.
The same is probably happening right now while you’re reading this article. You’re reading it, and because you’re reading it, you’ll probably have some idea about it. Maybe you think you can learn something, maybe you think it will help you on your spiritual path, maybe you’re watching it because you think I’m talking complete nonsense and you want to prove it—whatever it is.
You have a certain story in your mind about what you’re doing right now. But actually? WHAT IS THIS?
…
DON’T KNOW.
You’re just sitting somewhere, looking at a screen. That’s it.
There’s no need to make something out of it.
The same way, we don’t have to figure out what perception is or how to let go of it.
Let go of letting go of perception.
And just to answer the viewer's last question—whether we should let go of what we think the ultimate truth is.
What we think the ultimate truth is, is only what we think the ultimate truth is.
It’s NOT the ultimate truth, so why hold on to it?
I hope this answered your question.
I wish you all the best—your friend on the way. Bye.
